This Thursday's College Football Action

Given that this is a Thursday and there is a smaller slate of games, I figured I'd give some brief analysis to my picks for these games.  I will be betting all matches, but do not view any as impeccably strong plays.

NHL

Flyers (-130) Money Line - I happen to be betting this game due to an continuous wager with a friend that takes place anytime that the Flyers and Caps meet.  Both teams have been strong so far this season, with the Caps coming in undefeated, while the Flyers suffered one overtime loss at the hands of their former captain, Mike Richards.

In a game of very evenly matched teams, I give this edge to Philly based off the energy that will be in the air in the Wachovia Center for this early season match between two teams separated by a stretch of I-95.

Pick: Flyers
Outcome: L

NCAA Football

UCF -16 vs. UAB - This game is not one that I am crazy given the spread.  UAB, despite being 0-6, has managed to stay in some games against teams that are clearly better than them.  Mississippi State, Troy, and East Carolina all serve as examples.  Yet, this team is severely lacking in talent, and Bryan Ellis, one of their best players has been below average this year.

Central Florida has a star in quarterback Jeff Godfrey, but Godfrey has yet to truly have a breakout game this year.  Perhaps this will be the one, under the Thursday Night Lights.

Pick: UCF -16
Outcome: L

-----------------------

Arizona -3 vs. UCLA - UCLA is coming in with a winning record in Pac 12 play, while Arizona, a team I had pegged for a Top 25 finish has struggled.  UCLA has shined in the running game, with Johnathan Franklin leading the way.  However, their wins have come against Oregon State and Washington State, though Washington State is much improved from years past.

That said, Arizona comes into this game with a new coach, which will hopefully infuse a needed spark in their defense, which currently ranks 117th in the country in scoring defense.  Also positive is the fact that UCLA has struggled against top-tier quarterbacks.  Nick Foles has led a pretty good offense for Arizona.  If the defense can catch up, this should be a win for the Wildcats.  IF is, of course, the big question.  I like Arizona to cover the spread here in a close game.

Pick: Arizona -3
Outcome: W

Standings
NHL: 0-1
NCAA Football: 1-1
NFL: 0-0

First Week of Blogging - Week of October 17-25

I had a good last weekend, going 3-1 on the games I actually bet, while the rest of my picks fared pretty well as well.  Look for me to separate my picks that I end up betting from the general list of picks I like to give a little more exclusive look at my favorite picks.  Though I prefer betting college games, I will also try to include some NFL games.

Explanation of Betting Terms

EXPLANATION OF SOME BETTING TERMS

Since I find myself frequently instructing people as to how betting works and what some of it means, I figured I would provide a basic explanation.

+250 – This means if you bet $100, if this bet wins, you would win $250.  The same proportion would hold true for bets of more or less than $100.

-250 – This means that in order to win $100, you would need to place a wager of $250.  The same proportion would hold true for bets of more or less than $100.

These bets are common in baseball, where the money line is typically used as opposed to the spread, which is more common in football.  While a newcomer to betting may think that the bet with the + is a better play, that is not necessarily true because a – suggests a higher likelihood of winning, while the higher the number next to a + suggests an increasingly less likely chance of that bet working.

-7.5 (Spread) : This means the number of points that the favored team would need to win by.  A .5 is usually included to avoid a tie.  So if the spread is 7.5, the favorite would need to win by 8 or more points.

+7.5 (Spread) : This means the number of points that the underdog can lose by.  If the spread is 7.5, an underdog can lose by 7 or less points or win the game outright and the player will win the bet.

Over/Under: Number of points (or runs or goals) a team will score.  The player chooses if it will be over or under the set amount of points.  These picks can be done by individual team or combined between both teams involved in the game.

When betting online, it is rare to get completely even odds as most games usually carry a 10% commission on losing bets, meaning a -110 as listed above.

Introduction

Hello everyone,

As an avid sports fan, I have always enjoyed watching games and making my picks for them.  In an effort to make some side money and help to make games more exciting, I started betting on games a while back.  Here I will chronicle my picks for upcoming games and attempt to keep a log of how well I do.

My next post will contain a little breakdown for those of you who do not understand some of the symbols of betting.
